Special Needs Therapeutic Martial Arts

Powers' Isshinryu Karate Academy's Special Needs Therapeutic Martial Arts Program
Compared with Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Therapy

Since the early ninety's doctors have conducted studies with children involved in the martial arts that suffer from Functional Autism, ADHD or Asperger's Syndrome. Doctor's regularly recommend that children with Functional Autism, ADHD or Asperger's Syndrome train in the martial arts. Our program also offers services for individuals with other physical and mental handicaps.
Our special needs therapeutic martial arts program is not an alternative to physical therapy, occupational therapy or Speech Therapy. It is meant to work in tandem with it. Our special needs therapeutic martial arts program was formulated from Isshinryu Karate and it will enhance many of the lessons students learn in physical and occupational therapy such as: balance, coordination, and development of fine and gross motor skills. This is all done in a setting which promotes and teaches social interaction for every class participant. These are skills that students will keep and utilize in every facet of their lives.

Why train in Therapeutic Martial Arts?

Martial Arts schools are a multi-dimensional type of learning environment. The training at Powers Isshinryu Karate Academy focuses on the total student, the emotional, physical, and intellectual aspects of the individual.
Students who suffer from Functional Autism, ADHD or Asperger's Syndrome bring with them, a unique combination of social, emotional, intellectual, physical, and familial factors that can negatively affect that individual's learning process.
In martial arts, the focus remains on the individual. This allows each student, regardless of their physical skills or shortcomings, to focus on their own progress and goals along the path to personal de A student's progress is measured against him or herself and not other students. Each student is individually responsible for their own progress. This instills a sense of personal honor and self-esteem grows. A can do attitude is cultured and developed.
